Rupert Hart-Davis letters to Karl Goedecke, 1957-1958.

The collection consists of three letters from Hart-Davis to bookseller Karl Goedecke, 1957-1958, all concerning his queries about Oscar Wilde letters, and his subsequent attempts to clear up a misunderstanding about a forged letter that had passed from Goedecke to La Fayette Butler. All typewritten, signed letters on Hart-Davis Publishers letterhead.

Rupert Hart-Davis was a publisher, author, and man-of-letters. Born in London, he attended Eton College and Oxford University; he became an actor for a time, entering the publishing world in 1929 and working for William Heinemann, Ltd., and later Jonathan Cape, Ltd. In 1946, he founded his own publishing house, publishing a diverse range of both obscure and well-known authors. Karl E. Goedecke (1902-1979) was a book dealer based in Hazleton (eastern), Pennsylvania. He and his wife Katherine Lubrecht Goedecke (1902-1975) owned and operated the Laurel Book Service from 1932 to 1975 (name first used circa 1935).
